EXAMINATION OF STUDENT RECORDS BY PARENTS A parent who requests to examine permanent records of their child(ren) may do so by contacting the principal. The principal will be present during the examination of records by the parent. Upon completion of the examination, the parent and principal sign a form indicating that such a review has taken place. This form is filed in the student’s permanent record file. ENROLLMENT OF TRANSFER STUDENTS A student who transfers to Holy Family School will be given a probation period of up to six weeks in his/her current grade. During this time the student’s work will be evaluated for proper grade placement. Any change in placement will take place after a conference with parents, teachers, and Principal. Holy Family School will strive to fully educate every child. If it is determined that the school cannot fully service the needs of a particular student, then a conference with the student, parents, teacher, and principal will be held to determine the proper course of action. TRANSFER OF STUDENT RECORDS School records are transferred between schools. Parents sign a release form and records ordinarily are mailed to the new school immediately. Records may be retained until outstanding fees have been paid to the school/church. Transferal cannot be completed if the previous parish/school is withholding records. EXTRA-CURRICULAR ELIGIBILITY Students receiving failing grades or who have exhibited unsatisfactory conduct will be suspended from participation in sports activities. Expectations to be met by all students participating in any sport or related cheerleading activity at Holy Family School: 1. The student is academically performing in each subject area according to that individual’s ability; 2. The student has a positive attitude and shows personal responsibility; the student cooperates with and obeys all teacher directives, which includes classroom order, daily work, and general effort. If the participating student cannot comply with the above expectations, the Principal may require that the student not participate in the current sport for an appropriate length of time. Repeated correction will result in non-participation in sports for the academic year. The Principal will communicate any decision in this regard with the student, teachers, coaches, and parents. In an effort to better quantify each student’s performance, weekly grade checks and eligibility sheets will be maintained by the school. Any student participating in any extracurricular event will be ineligible for one week if he/she is receiving a failing grade in any subject. A letter grade of "D" will place the student on academic probation (noted by the letter "P"). The teachers will compile their class lists each Friday. The eligibility lists will be compiled each Monday and posted in the school office by the end of school on Monday. Every student in grades 4-8 will receive a current grade sheet each Monday. Eligibility/ineligibility will run Monday to Monday. At the end of each quarter, an academic ineligibility list will be made from that quarter’s report cards. Students in grades 4-8 failing any subject during that nine-week period, will be ineligible for two weeks from the ending date of the quarter in question. PROMOTION In keeping with our belief, that all students should work to attain their God-given potential, social promotion is NOT now, or ever has been, an option. The following criteria will be utilized when making the promotion decision. (Please note: as each individual student’s case is determined alternate factors may be considered.) Promotion decisions will be discussed with the parent as an on-going student/child learning issue throughout the school year. • a cumulative failing grade in two or more major core subjects (Core subjects are defined as Religion, Reading/Literature, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, English and Computer Literacy) • a cumulative grade less than failing, but one that has consistently declined through serious lack of effort in two or more of the major core areas • utilizing standardized test scores, a serious/significant difference (six months or more difference between score and current grade level) between the attained grade level and the grade level the student is currently assigned • excessive absences or tardiness, either excused or unexcused, which results in regularly missing teacher instruction • failing or showing an unwillingness (now or in the future) to fulfill class responsibilities or work towards improvement In an attempt to help any student in jeopardy of failure, attendance at offered remediation classes during the intersession is expected. These sessions will be for one to two weeks in duration and will be approximately two hours each day. Additionally, as an on-going offer of assistance, academic tutoring is available on most days, Monday through Thursday, from 3:30-4:00 in each classroom. Teachers are available, after dismissing their homeroom students, to answer questions. Often special help can be given by the teacher or by other students (peer tutors). If more specific help is needed, arrangements may be available through a meeting with the teacher. As a method of keeping the parents constantly informed, Academic Watch Lists are compiled each week for all students in grades 4-8. Every student in grades 4-8 will receive a current grade sheet each Monday as a means of parent notification. Additionally, every student’s grades are available on-line through our rvsgradebook website. If a student is getting a "D" or "F" in any subject, the student is asked to stay after school from 3:30-4:00 with the teacher/class in which the student is having difficulty. Students whose achievement is not at grade level, but who are making their best effort, may be placed in the next grade. Students with continual placement and below grade level achievement receive a certificate rather than a diploma upon completion of the eighth grade. |
