Holy Family School News Extra!!

Saturday School?

Have you heard the news?  The "missing homework" demon needs to be exorcised!  We are hoping to avoid a repeat of last quarter's results -- poor grades from missing homework assignments.  We want to solve the problem at the beginning of the quarter -- and the old ideas to spur the students "on" aren't working as effectively as we would like.  So this is our new idea.  We will try to begin this Saturday, August 11th, 2007
It is a trial and we hopefully will not need to utilize it at all.  Here are the ground rules:

    1.  If a student in grades 4 - 8 has a missing assignment in any class (from the preceding Friday to the current Thursday) by the current Friday lunch time (12:45), they will be assigned to Saturday School.

    2.  Saturday School begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 10:00 a.m. or as soon as the missing assignment(s) is finished.  (One exception here:  a student must stay for thirty (30) minutes minimum.  He/she cannot appear at 8:00, turn the assignment in and promptly leave.  He / she must stay until 8:30 a.m.) Any student scheduled to participate in any extracurricular activity on the assigned Saturday is ineligible to participate in the extracurricular activity until the Saturday School commitment has been fulfilled.

    3.  We will not be leaving the classroom for students to call for a ride as they finish.  The pick-up time will need to be prearranged.  They will stay in the classroom with the supervising teacher until a parent appears in the room to pick-up or we dismiss to the door at 10:00 a.m.

    4.  Students not picked up by 10:15 will be charged $5.00 per 15 minute increments.  We will not provide baby-sitting.

    5.  IF a family event has previously been scheduled and a student is unable to attend an assigned Saturday School date, an alternative date will be assigned - IN ADVANCE - not on the specific Saturday morning.

    6.  If a child is ill and cannot attend the Saturday Morning School session, parents must call the school office prior to 8:00 a.m. and leave a message on the school answering machine.  Additionally, the student must bring a written note from his / her parents indicating the child was ill on the previous Saturday morning.  The student will be UNEXCUSED if both of these steps are not completed.

    7.  Any other Saturday morning emergencies would be handled as noted in number six.

    8.  If a student does not attend the assigned Saturday school session, he / she is forfeiting a great deal:

        a.  the grade for the missing assignment (s) will be a ZERO with no make-up possibilities.

        b.  the student would possibly be unable to attend their major class field trip in May

        c.  a continual pattern would result in a student NOT being promoted...

        d.  OR, the student would find themselves "PLACED" into the next grade level -- meaning the work was not sufficient for "promotion" but the student would not benefit from repeating the grade.
AND, the student would server one day of in-school suspension.

I can personally assure you I do not want to implement or follow through with any of this.  BUT, the list is too long, the loss of gained knowledge is too great and the consistent lack of responsibility for their tasks too burdensome for all, in the long term.
Also, please remember that you can access your child's up-to-date work via the rvsgradebook site.  Remember too that some of the teachers are utilizing the online homework listing -- this can be found through our hfsdanv.org website.  Grade sheets indicating current status are sent home to every student in grades 4 - 8 every Monday.  And, every student should have and be writing in an assignment notebook for every class period, every day; checking them before packing their books, checking them at home to insure the work needed is completed and then brought back to school for the next day.  I believe the parameters to make your children successful within the homework venue have been carefully planned and laid out.  NOW as in the past, it is up to the students.
